In 1997, David Deveau started up Riverside Lobster, a live lobster exporting business. In 2013, Mr. Deveau decided to explore new lobster processing methods at his factory, now located in Meteghan, Nova Scotia. Over the past few years, the business expanded rapidly thanks to major investments along with the introduction of innovative processes and products that have modernised a traditional industry. In addition to these innovations, the business has exceptional quality control measures and devoted employees. As a result, this business has become a leader in the value added lobster industry.

“We are pleased to present the Prix d’excellence Louis E. Deveau to Riverside Lobster, an innovative business that plays an important role in our community. Both the lobster industry and research on lobster quality represent priority development areas for Université Sainte-Anne and the Government of Nova Scotia alike,”

- Allister Surette, Université Sainte-Anne’s President and Vice-Chancellor.

As proof that Riverside Lobster sees the sustainability and quality of its products as essential outcomes, the business has obtained major certifications, most notably from the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) and the British Retail Consortium (BRC Global Standard for Food Safety). The first certification ensures product traceability, while the second one ensures safety and quality.

Its strong growth has also led to the creation of over 250 jobs. Its workers come from all parts of Canada and from abroad. They work year-round and receive generous benefits, including a pension plan, a health insurance plan, a transportation service and housing, all subsidized by the employer. In order to provide better childcare for workers, a day-care centre is also in the works.

In addition to its role as an important economic engine for the region, this business contributes and reinvests in a wide range of community initiatives. This includes sponsoring and participating in important events and organizations, such as Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie, Yarmouth Jr A Mariners, Chicks with Sticks, Hockey Heroes Weekend (Heart & Stroke Foundation), Yarmouth Regional Hospital Foundation, Relay for Life and the Clare Bluegrass Association. It also contributes to several local organizations, such as the Atelier de Clare, parish churches and the Special Olympics, to name but a few.

In recognition of its innovation and leadership in the lobster industry, as well as its commitment to and support of the community, Université Sainte-Anne is proud to present the Louis E. Deveau Award for Excellence to Riverside Lobster International Inc.
