Church Point (NS), January 22, 2021 – Parents who have gathered with their kids on one of Clare's soccer fields will recognize the name “Lauren Amero” as someone who is deeply involved with Clare Minor Soccer. 2019 graduates of École secondaire de Clare will remember Lauren as the president of the Graduation Committee and the Student Council. Her professors will surely tell you that her good mood, positive attitude, and leadership qualities will be extremely useful to her in her teaching career.

A native of Saulnierville, Lauren is a second-year student in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (major in French) program at Université Sainte-Anne. As someone who is deeply involved with her community, she wanted to pursue postsecondary studies in French. “Having grown up in this tightly-knit Acadian community, it was a pretty easy choice when the time came to make the decision to pursue my studies at Université Sainte-Anne, close to home,” she explains.

She was fortunate to have a typical university experience during her first year, combining her studies and sports, especially as a member of the rugby team and a trainer for the Multisport program offered by the Municipality of Clare. But like everyone else, she had to adapt to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic as early as March 2020.

“My experience at Sainte-Anne has been quite good during this pandemic. Given that I enjoy staying home to do my courses, I feel fortunate that it is the only major change I had to adapt to, unlike other students currently in Canada,” she explains. “All the public health measures in place make me feel safe, and I am considering taking in-person classes on the campus during the Winter 2021 semester, because I miss the typical student life experience.”

When we took the above photo of Lauren and the Université Sainte-Anne monument, it was by a happy coincidence that we discovered that the engineer who designed and installed it is none other than her uncle, Robert Thériault (who passed away in September 2020). A 1961 graduate of Université Sainte-Anne's Bachelor of Arts program, he came back to his alma mater to work there as a civil engineer in the 1980's.

Lauren has great memories of her discussions with her uncle about Université Sainte-Anne, since both were proud to be part of this large family. “My uncle Robert was always enthusiastic when I would go into detail about my courses. He would often find similarities between our educational paths. But he was especially amazed by the multitude of courses offered today.”

“As a student and employee at Sainte-Anne, he had the chance to observe many changes over the years. He was particularly touched by the influence that the region of Clare has had on the institution. When I would tell him that we were studying the works of J. Alphonse Deveau and Georgette LeBlanc, he realized the impact of Acadian culture on the academic community and was proud of it.”

We feel like we have come full circle with Lauren, a committed and resourceful young woman who is sure to leave her mark on Université Sainte-Anne and who will be a model for her students when she embarks on her teaching career.
